Hello everybody.

I also wanted to share my game, because it's fun to see what everybody can do with tntbasic and i'm also a bit curious how my game will work on other computers.
Especially now our friend mapmaker has suddenly run into new troubles, the only way to find out is to try..! So we can improve the software.
I have allready send one copy to Denis, but i'm willing to send it to more people who might be interested.

The game: It's a space shooter (anyone remembers nemesis, r-type)
The mainship has two weapons and you can pick up energy bonus items ect.
It runs at 30 fps, i could make it faster but 30 fps is perfect, a friend of my has tested the game on a G4 cube and it works allright, but my guess is that
G3 will give a lower framerate.
The game looks very nice, it has beautifull backgrounds and a nice
parallax scrolling and a terrible endboss.

The problem: no homepage... So if you like to try the game you have to send me a email and i can send it to you (4,5Mb). That's why it's only one level, i cannot send more than 5Mb by email. (so i have to skip the approaching endboss music)...

Let me know on what computer it is tested if you choose to response, of course i expect a evaluation afterwards.

Very cool

NIce game JW. On my G4 ibook, it got the intended 30fps. Something odd though: At some point I realized that my helper ovals had fixed into place. I think it might have been after dying and starting halfway through the level.

I see the similarity to nemesis, and I like it. However, your enemies are too fast for me to dodge-the enemies have been made faster but the player remains slow. More speed would be nice.

I also never got much energy, even after playing the whole level. It would be nice if it were more available or easier to collect.

One more thing. The leaves in space were a little strange. And because the obstacles have no flat edge, it's hard to dodge the leaves and not get hurt.

btw, is that plum picture from rayman?

Niiiice. I like the "trailing" shots idea.

My main complaint again is the lack of ship speed; I didn't feel nimble enough (much like eekaydee). It's allright to have a ship that goes backwards a little faster - most space shooters manoever on a screen-relative basis, rather than level relative. That would give much finer control freedom. It runs fine on my 800mhz G4 imac.

But I agree... the leaves against a space backdrop are bizzare.

JW, your game's a-prettypretty good!

i agree about the speed. in fact, have you tried attaching the ship to the mouse? i've always wanted to see a shooter with the ship attached to the mouse. also the collision detection gets on my nerves. it's standard practice in shooters-all the shooters i've played at least- for only the center point of the players ship to collide with things. think of all the small, impossible looking tunnels you could force the player through if they were just a point. and, if the ship were attached to the mouse, those tunnels could twist and turn in all sorts of agonizing ways. also, and this is just my taste, but i'd prefer one hit one kill for the player.

i'm definitely digging on the swath-o-death action you got going on with the gun. that's a nice idea, one that i might write down and steel.
as for the leaves in space, i could care less! but the plumbs go too far!!!

shit, i'm kinda pumped to make my own shooter now.

oh, i almost forgot. i get between 16 and 26 frames/sec on my 500 MHz g3 with 256 MB ram. it slows down, but never abruptly, and it's always well within playability.

JW, ever play Darius Twin for SNES? It's a pretty good shooter game, and if you haven't, you might want to try it out for some ideas.

Thanks everybody, for testing the program and your quick response.

I can say now that a lot of people dislike the speed of their own ship.
This speed should be the starting speed, i must find away to pick up more bonusitems, including speed increasment. I allready have this in mind.
The same thing with extra weapons of items that will stop the enemy.

Now the question, what should i do, i can send items arround to pick up,
or i could make the player pay with energy to increase the speed.
But then i would have to make a couple of key available to push, it might be more difficult to play...
Or i can make a menu after defeating the endboss where you can choose your
extra weapons, speed increasments ect.. depending on the level of energy.

What should i do ?

Yes. that's correct. It was only one level
Normally after that, you should be making a hyperjump to the next level.

But don't worry, there will be more to come.

And yes, the purple fruit was taken from rayman (don't tell anybody else)

Be very careful about infringing copyrights... It's safer to just run something up in photoshop than risk an official looking envelope arriving when you start trying to sell your game.

heres my theory about collision detection with scenery in games of this type

i reckon the best way to avoid annoyance with hitting scenery is to give the player a little leaway to over lap.

for example, by putting a reduced size sprite under the main sprite so that the edge of your ship can scrape the edge of the scenery but it cant scrape too much

thats what i think any way

yeah, that's what i've been saying. instead of using the sprite col() function to determine collision, check to see if sprite x and sprite y of the ship have collided with anything. that's the way it's done in every shmup i've ever played. it's used to particularly great effect in ikaruga. there's this one part in that game where you can position your ship halfway on-top of a wall and just fly by wave after wave of enemy.

when i play ikaruga, i like to get massive chains and big hi scores, not skip half the level by hugging the wall like a big girly.

no offence like
