can you set the pen transparency when your drawing text?

I certainly can't. Try pasting the text into a blank canvas in whatever colour, grabbing the image and the nusing it as a sprite with a set transparancy.

That works. Or you can make two canvases, one with the text (white text on black) and one with the text color (solid). Then you can take the solid color one and use the white text as a mask to preserve the anti-aliasing.

What you describe is similar to what I thought might be an answer to my question on the Output Console. i.e. the output on Canvas 0 and the program on Canvas 1. But I hadn't got a chance to try it but nor had I even dreamed that I could perhaps use it the way you suggest. As soon as get some time, I'll try it.
