I have just found a need for such a beast. Any chance of this?

Have you tried placing a second transparent sprite with your collision image in the same place as the first and testing for collisions with that? That should let you test for collisions with whatever image you want.

eg

sprite 1,x,y,realimage
sprite 2,x,y,collisionimage
set sprite transparency 2,100

if sprite col (somesprite,2)<>-1
' do stuff
end if

Cheers,

Mark

I settled on using a collision rect instead. Its still a bit more unweildy than allowing a separate mask, but what the hey.
