Hardware mode and sprite maps

I'm doing a game with two duelling spaceships. The ships can move in eight directions, but I don't want to use eight separate images. therefore, I tried using sprite rotation in hardware mode, but when I initialize hardware mode, my collision/transparency map is ignored. this doesn't happen in normal graphics mode. is there a way to solve it?

Unfortunately, The only way would be with several images. The collision/alpha thing is a hardware mode problem.
