I'd like to be able to:
1. "get" the current graphics mode, so I know what the user's resolution is currently set at.
2. enter graphics mode at whatever the current setting is, without TNT Basic telling the machine what mode to use.

TNT Basic lets us say the graphics mode (i.e. 640 x 480) but it automagically chooses the highest refresh rate the user's video card can do at that resolution. Sometimes, the user's monitor does not support certain refresh rates that their card does, so the game ends up being unusable to them.

( hope I haven't misunderstood you! ) you can set the refresh rate: set frame rate fps

The set framerate function doesn't affect the monitor's refresh rate, just the rate of the frames put out by TNT Basic.

Yeah, it's not a bad idea to have TNT Basic start in the current res. I'll add it to the todo list (if it's not there already!)
