Avoiding tearing with VBL Sync Off ?

I'm running OSX 10.2.4 and i cannot run anything with VBL sync enabled.How ever i would like to avoid tear effects as well.

I recall vaguely, reading something in the help files about tearing not occurring on CRT monitors, is this so?

Is there a certain methodology i could follow to avoid tearing without VBL sync enabled?

Is it okay to enable VBL SYNC at other points in the code away from the graphics mode call?

In relation to that I'm considering throwing a dialog that asks the player if they are running this application under OSX or if they have a CRT monitor.


Could someone give a good state diagram/algorithm for a game loop/internal structure.

Barebones/all purpose just labelling section by section what should the game be doing, updating sprites, checking for collisions, etc.
