set tile color does not exist, but you can include color tiles in your tileset and use set map tile or set tile ( I don't remember, look it up in the help ).

It is not possible to have tile mask, but it is possible to have sprite masks, so you can use sprites instead of tiles easily if the map is static. If it's moving, it's possible too ( I did it ) but it's much more difficult.

Yes, but it easily gets slow(with the sprite technique).

it doesn't matter either way, because if i have to switch tiles instead of setting their colors, then i don't need to worry about making a color mask. i'll just make the tiles whatever colors they need to be.

Well, yeah but you probably didn't have the whole screen covered with tiles and alot of sprites on top of that!(I wanted to do a top view game where you could zoom, but it went really slow pretty fast so I gave up. for now.)

I had the screen covered with sprites. For example, if you have 250 100x100 tiles, you'll only need to show 49 sprites (7 X 7 for 640x480 ), not 62500 ( 250 X 250 ) !!!

And I guess hardware mode would get it definitivly too slow. But in software mode, there is NO problem. The slowdown is almost not noticeable.

Maybe I'm stupid :) I guess nobody would even think about showing 62500 sprites on the screen :)
