i was just trying out poll input, using an analog stick to move a red circle around the screen, and while i was doing this i must have bumped my mouse, and when i did this the circle went flying off the screen. i ran the program again, only this time i didn't bother with the analog stick and found that when i moved the mouse the red circle behaved as if the mouse was the analog stick.

Input Sprocket was made to support all kinds of inputs. I'm not surprised it doesn't make any difference between mouse and joystick. I guess you normally use one at a time.

is there any way to turn the mouse off so my game won't take input from it then, i wouldn't want a player to accidentally knock themselves into oblivion.

I've not used input sprocket for a bit, but I seem to remember you disable the mouse control on the configuration screen. Do an 'edit input' and go to the mouse bit and assign the mouse movement to 'none' or something like that.
