Radical Rebound 2 is there for you to try it!

Download (3.5 MB) at

http://www.danlabgames.com/radicalrebound/RadicalRebound.sit

Remember the old Radical Rebound? Well, forget it: this one uses the same basic idea but has some MUCH MUCH better graphics and improved gameplay, with levels and bosses.
Take a look at some shots (only 20k!)
And for now the game is free.
I' d like suggestions on new bonuses, new level missions, graphics (what' s ok what' s not), how the variable framerate works (should get all the FPS it can get), music, difficulty and any other thing.

Here are some shots:

Tell me if you like it!

Suggestions

Hey, cool game. I like how you allow the player to adjust all the parts of the game.

Mind if I make a few suggestions?

The planets are a little distracting and because they move so fast it doesn't seem like they are very far away.
Maybe you can make them move at different speeds to give the feeling of depth. Moan channels would probably do the job well. Another thing is that they are a little bright. The ones farther away should be faded or dark.

Are you going to consider releasing the source code?

Thanks!
Actually the planets do move slow or fast depending from their distance ( smaller planets move slower );

I could think of releasing the code for personal use only, but then, I think it wont be good to learn from 'cause it' s bad code, and it' s for half in italian half in english (I didn' t decide myself).
So I think I won' t release it, but if somebody really wants it...

with the graphics too? well, I think you do...

Ok, for a week, everybody who wants the source must ask it in this thread, after a week I' ll send it to everybody at the same time, so I avoid sending it to everyone individually.

hmmm, you' re also getting a version with sound efx... happy? ;-)
I was thinking of a version where the shield gets smaller with time, and you have to pickup bonuses with to keeop it up.
Or some sort of shop between levels.

Any ideas for powerups/ bonuses/ cool things?

Pretty cool game! How did you get it to run so fast while using the hardware mode rotation effect? The only thing I can think of is you had the program dump the sprites facing all 360 degrees and just used those. Hmm, now that I think of it, I should have done that with this too...

Anyway, enough rambling. I think it would be pretty cool if you put torque into the movement of your ship. Something like this...

Argh! The above link doesn't work.

Here is one that does...

I hate when this happens.

Thanks for the compliments! ;-)

To cool fusion: that "torque" (what does that mean?) is very cool! Looks like there is a sort of acceleration in the rotation velocity, right? Didn' t think about it, but it' s really nice; maybe I' ll put a thing like that, fust a little more manuvrable. Thanks!

The game is actually in hardware mode
How did I get a game running so fast in graphics mode hardware? 'Cause it' s in 640*480, TNT does pretty weel there (28 FPS on my old iMac G3 350, but probably 60+ on your G4). 640*480 is pretty enough, Danlabs games are all in that res, and he' s our legend ;-)

Also, very cool thing, I' ve put variable framerates, so it pushes your computer at the maximum framerate it can get (when I give you the source, you could tell me the FPS you get) ;-)

in 3-4 days I' ll send you the stuff

Thanks for emailing me the source code. I'll use babelfish to translate the italian variables, and then I should be able to figure some things out. I'll only use it for personal purposes; the only reason I want it in the first place is to help learn TNT Basic.

On my 1Ghz 768MB DDR flatscreen iMac, I got around 48fps most of the time.

The second version is a lot better than the first, but I liked the first too.
Keep up the good work, matteo! I don't have any suggestions. Radical Rebound is great like it is.

And to Mark Tully and John Treece-Birch: Thanks for making a great program!

The only reason I want it in the first place is to help learn TNT Basic.

Hmmm... ouch! That is a bad idea ;-)
The code is baaaad, badder (?) than you think...

And I think looking at someone elses code is not much fun, it' s better to do experiments by yourself.

Anyway thanks for the compliments, and, you' re right, thanks to Mark and John... it' s hard to make yourself pay for a game made in TNT if you think that for 25 bucks you got such great program ;-) (though I' m not not saying the price is too low: for more I would not have bought it ;-)

Money and shop

Yeah, I agree! About your previous post, I think that having a shop and a way to get money would make it more fun. You could get money from the missions, and pay money to repair your ship and shield, and upgrade your speed, buy more lives, get a bigger shield, etc.

money & shops

I guess I' ll leave the game the way it is: (oh, not really, I ' m gonna put loads of music, sounds and polish a few things).
why? because the game is very difficult to balance, it took me some time to get the right ratio between shield, energy, number of enemies per level, number of enemies to kill. And also, putting different tipes of enemies would be hard, for this reason. I like it to be an original, small arcade game.
Instead I just decided what my next game will be:
A sort of Escape Velocity without the shopping part, only missions of wich you can yourself choose the difficulty for wich you can be rewarded money to buy equipment (loads of equipment! weapons, missiles, shields yeah!) and stuff... since the player itself can choose the difficulty for every level (the harder the more money!) there is no problem of balancing!

The engine will be much more dinamic, I tested it and it' s just so cool to watch! you can move in every direction, with the planets and background and enemy ships scrolling in that direction in parallax, while your ship looks still in the middle of the screen, rotating; there will be weapons controlled with mouse and normal weapons, missiles and you will have missions maybe as bounty hunter and fleet destroyer :wow: ;-)
