Pro&Cons of different collision types

I am in the conceptual phase of my game;

I am adverse to setting up/using sprite to tile collisions/rect collisions.

however i am interested in using;

map polygons

set image collision
----------------------------------------
I find the set image collision to be pretty straight forward and fast but, i didn't find enough information on the map polygon, basically;

A more detailed explaination.
how efficient it is in comparison to the other collision methods?
