I would like to have a new mode in Genesis that were Strings. So you could have it when a player goes there, the text of the String is displayed, or it changes a variable etc. You could do this with objects but it would be easier if there were a String mode in Genesis.

Map triggers

Generalising from what you're saying, I think you want map triggers, so that when the player moves to a certain point "stuff happens"?

Well the main problem with this is that TNT Basic doesn't actually know where your character is (ie which one of the many sprites is the hero?).

A more flexible solution would be to use TNT Basic's 'in map polygon' function to test if the hero is in a polygon and then trigger something depending on the polygon he's in.

You can draw polygons over the map in Genesis.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, but...

Yeah, but then you dont know what to trigger from the map, you need to program it in the game and then it aint as easy to make maps. And when(if) you make a standalone genesis for extra levels they can only use the hardcoded triggers. That could work for must stuff, but when making an RPG(which I'm not...) you could need a string thingy(or variable or whatever) to make talking NPC's and such.

You could...

You could have it so that you could put out strings(or attach strings to map object or map polygons) and that you via code can check if there is a string in the object/polygon. Like a "Map Object String" thing.

Attaching data to map elements

What you're talking about is attaching data to map elements, such as objects and polygons. This is a good idea and is needed for exactly the reasons you stated.
Strings would be quite easy to attach to elements, we could probably add that without too much trouble, or even just simple numbers. We've planned for a long time for you to be able to add arbitrary data to map elements but we never did it as it required a lot of work to TNT Basic to support it. But a single string for each element would be fairly easy to do.

Thanks for the suggestion, we'll add it to the to do list :)
